In New York City's high society of the 1870s, social conventions are rigidly enforced and personal desires are stifled beneath the surface of lavish parties and formal galas. Newland Archer, a young lawyer, becomes engaged to May Welland but finds himself drawn to her cousin Ellen Olenska, who has returned from Europe with a scandalous reputation. As Newland navigates his feelings and societal expectations, he must confront the constraints of tradition and the costs of following his heart.
