Total Quality Management (TQM)

Engineers‘ Competences And The Role Of Tqm

Introduction:

TQM basically advocates the introduction and practice of a new culture. There is a high degree of compatibility between what TQM tries to preach as a philosophy of modem competitiveness, and how the new role of engineers can fit in this scenario.

Role of TQM:

  1. TQM basically advocates the introduction and practice of a new culture.
  2. This is to be based on waste removal, maximizing organizations’ effectiveness and encouraging a process of innovativeness and adding value by problem solving activities.
  3. This process is encouraged by people interactions at different levels and continuous and effective communication processes which try to relay continually the need to focus on organisational objectives.
  4. This role is meant to reflect the importance of considering organisations as total systems and the need to work across boundaries to achieve the objectives which will decide on the future existence of the organisations concerned.

  • There is a high degree of compatibility between what TQM tries to preach as a philosophy of modem competitiveness, and how the new role of engineers can fit in this scenario.
  • The slogans such as ‘world class manufacturers’, ‘market leaders’, ‘competitive organizations’ are not self-advertised labels but  statements which recognize the degree of success, vigour, health, progressiveness and determination that businesses such as Japanese manufacturers have earned themselves through best practice and a dedication to TQM.
